Current name game

Okay...the game is still on. The current line of thought...

Keeping Ethiopian first name, and Paul for K's middle name & Katrina for A's middle name.

Anyone want to vote?

  1. I like the middle names but I think keeping their ethiopian names will be too hard. It might frustrate them just as much that nobody will pronounce it correctly. Plus, maybe they will want a new name to go with their new lives? That's my vote ;-)

  2. I think we should keep there African names in the Englisk translation and there middle names be just that.Because we have been calling them Kebrom and Astedde for over a month I think.Thats who they are to me!

  3. Hurray for the court date! Regarding voting for name change: My brother, George, is called "George." When he lived close to the Mexican border his name was still "G-e-o-r-g-e," but he was called "Or-Hay." It will be the same for our children. No matter what, their names will be changed if for no other reason than enunciation. I have many friends who have unique pronunciations of their names (i.e. Rashel. We MUST say "RA-shell," not "Ra-SHELL." She is frustrated when not prounced correctly.) I think that will be the case for the little ones. I vote to eliminate their frustration by using their Ethiopian names as middle names and having American first names. Hey, this is fun....having my opinion asked. Thank you!! Whatever we call them, it will still translate into, "I love you."

  4. Aaron and I are also starting this conversation. (Very preliminary discussions, of course). I personally lean towards having an American name and the Ethiopian name (either first or middle, either way). You may choose to call them by their American name now but at least you aren't "taking away" their heritage name. At some point in the future (when they are adults or even teenagers trying to figure out where they fit into the world) they may want to use their Ethiopian name.

Also, you could have discussions with them as they learn more English to see what they prefer. Of course, my opinion only and I don't think either way is wrong.

  5. My vote (which doesn't matter a twit;))...keep their African names, too much transition too fast. Then they can decide when they're a little older if they want to go w/ American or Ethiopian. My cousins are Shwaye, Tezerash (Tez), Bene, Tizita, Teodros (Teo) and several others. Happy deciding!!!!
