What a weekend!
Brenna & McKenna (her cousin) finished their entry for the Paint the State (anti-meth) campaign. Paul helped Brenna hang it on the outside of Paul's office today...so proud of their hard work!!
Kyra's back from camp...and I'm SO GLAD to have her home. JoyLynn is looking forward to x-rays on her arm on Tuesday morning & hopefully a new cast.
Paul worked on some landscaping this weekend...but it was HOT!!! I'm not a good outside helper. I think years of summer allergies have had a Pavlov like effect on me & yardwork. We just don't get along so well :)
Atsede had a really good weekend. She lost a second tooth. She's jumping off of the top of the ladder in Nana's pool. She does NOT like melon, in any form. Though, if she must choose between eating one bite of melon or eating one bite of spinach dip...she chose the melon. I love the way she says 'guck, guck' when I'm trying to get her to eat something she doesn't like. She's a sport about her icky tasting medicine, have noticed the 'gucks' getting louder each dose. She & JoyLynn woke up early as JL was going to church with Addie (we're not brave enough to take the little ones yet)...Atsede was SLEEPY still, saw me in bed & asked Paul, 'Mama, muh tah, mutah?' He asked if she'd like to crawl in & she did. Such a good cuddler & she fell back asleep.
Kebrom had a good weekend also. He loves having his 'Kyla' home. I think he prefers her to me! He LOVES the sprinkler & the kiddie pool. He went right into both in his cargo shorts, soaked to the skin. He brought a MUDDY pair of cargo shorts (and yes, he was stark naked at this point) with chants of 'charlie, charlie' which is how he pronounces 'sorry.' The gross shorts were so worth the 'charlie, charlie!' Kebrom also got a new set of pj's this weekend, with soccer balls on the front. He was so thrilled with them, he giggled as he fondled them when I showed him. 'Kelom ees?' he asked. Then, when I showed him the socks I got for him, that was almost too much. 'Kelom's sockees?' More giggles & running off to show Atsede his new socks. Who knew such small things could provide such delight!
Atsede has discovered the drive through. We've only gone maybe 3 times in the 7 weeks she's been home, but as we drove by McDonalds, we heard cries of 'rabek' (hungry) and JUICE. On her way to an all American kid. She still insists she likes ice cream, and I think she has yet to finish one. Except for push-ups at Nana's (I won't buy those expensive things)...those are a big hit. Kebrom didn't even want me to throw away his empty wrapper, in case he might find a drip or two in there still.
Both A&K played well with cousins. It was so fun to hear the giggles as the played in Nana's front yard. They really interact & play with each other and with others now.
Atsede has said the first things about their past. In Ace Hardware, she saw a low dresser, and showed us how Kebrom slept in a drawer when he was a baby. She also helped Paul pick up some sticks in the field, add to the burn pile, and asked if she needed to pick up 'chips' (dried poop) for the fire. She's a hard worker, jumps right in.
Bedtime no longer produces huge tears. There were a few tonight, but I think because she'd been enjoying the Cosby show & didn't want to go to bed. She's seeming to grasp not all things are equal, for everyone, at least I hope. So many things to learn...they're doing great.
I often wonder what is going through their heads, mainly Atsede as Kebrom seems to have no recollection of life prior to here. Do they thing this is temporary? Do they understand we'll be here forever?

How fun (and heartbreaking, at the same time) to hear stories about their early lives. There was chatter on the yahoo group a while back of writing those down. Little things like where a scar came from, or any little bits they remember. Things a mother would remind her children about when they were very young. In case they ever forget. Of course Isaac does not tell us stories of his babyhood, but how priceless an opportunity that is!
